what size gas check should I use for 6.5 x 55 bullets? do they need to be specially "6.5 mm", or could I use regular 25 caliber gas checks?
thanks

thanks for answer, jeeper,
here's another question: what velocity do you think the gas checks enable a cast lead bullet to be pushed to? (without a lot of leading-up the bore) I'd be using a hard lead alloy, wheel weights with a little linotype added. |

Many years ago I was told that a plain cast bullet would lead a barrel over 1600 feet per second and a gas checked bullet would let you push the bullet up to
2600 feet per second. Now I believe that when you push a bullet over 1300 feet per second you need a gas check on it.
For a while many years ago I shot IHMSA pistol silhouette using gas checked bullets. I gave up after a few months because the knockdown on the 50 pound 200 meter targets was not as good as jacketed bullets. This was with my XP-100 in 708 Remington. I loaded both gas checked and jacketed bullets at 2600 fps for competition. |
