Helmets vs seatbelts | ||

I realize this has NOTHING to do with your post, but why is it I'm required to wear a seatbelt in my car-and not required to use a helmet on a motorcycle?
I'm in Texas.
There's a kevlar helmet in one of the museums at Ft Bragg with a 7.62 round sticking out of it. |

The insurance industry put a lot of pressure on the legislature to mandate seatbelt use. It is a very good habit to get into- they really do save lives. If it
reduces injuries and deaths it save the insurance companies money.
I remember when we had helmet laws, then had them repealed. I have no idea why they let that go away. Jim NRA Life Member Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. --- Thomas Jefferson. |

Seat belt use was mandated by a transportation secretary or they would withhold highway funds. It was tried on helmets but but some states repealed the law
later in some states. That is also how the 21 age for drinking came about. Do gooders that get appointed to the job.

I rode for a short while without a helmet when it was first repealed in the late '70s. I remember feeling naked and very unprotected- and it was NOISY!
I have read in some medical journels back when I was first helping my wife through her medical training that a person on a bicycle could sustain serious head trauma by just falling over and hitting a curb with their head. My wife, girls and I wear helmets when riding our bikes. It's easy for the girls- that's the only way they have ever ridden. They have also never ridden in a car without a seatbelt. I used to never wear one until I was a cop in the '80s. After about my second fatality with no seatbelts worn I became a believer. I was the only cop who wore one until they started seeing how much easier it is to control a vehicle, especially in high performance driving, when your butt stays behind the wheel. My wife does surgery, and surgeons have a phrase for motorcycle riders. If they wear a helmet they are organ donors. Without a helmet they are meat- cooling. I miss my old Honda 750 but will probably never have another. There's just too many people on the roads now. I wonder if Kerouac said that in the '50s? AH Jim, it is so nice living in a small town where traffic is basically slower and people really respect the two wheelers. I can't believe I used to drive
in Lubbock and OKC on a 90 and later in San Angelo on a 350, during rush hour traffic. Lubbock, believe it or not, was heaviest traffic at that hour.
Interestingly, even I-35 in OKC didn't bother me and that was on the 90.
Nothing is required for the little 50cc scooters, but my wife wears a bicycle helmet, which I detest to wear, and I wear a sanctioned short helmet, type with ears uncovered. Works better with hearing aids. My wife doesn't work in surgery but her instincts still point her to head protection. When all else fails, BLAME BUSH! |

Come on up to New Hampshire. We still have no helmet or seat belt law. The riding is some of the most scenic , hilly, curvy, and less congested in the country.
Just watch out for Moose. I actually think you should wear a helmet or seat belt but feel it is not the state's , or the insurance company's, job to
tell me I have to.

You answered my question!! That and the funding deal. Wearing a helmet, to me, would be just common sense. New Hampshire doesn't have mandatory helmet or seatbelt laws? Doesn't NH also have no State income tax? Thor96, did you used to reside in San Angelo? I lived there a few years back and found the people there very friendly. |

Hold your resignation in a postdated envelope for 6 months. If there is no change, stick the envelope back in your pocket and make something change. Then you can resign, but not until then. My decision was far too quick. Now I'm stuck in Missery. When all else fails, BLAME BUSH! |

Believe me, I would prefer the climate of San Angelo, far enough west to be out of the humidity and far enough south to be out of the sand storms blowing off the Cap Rock. Oh well, as I've said before, I guess I'd be happy somewhere between Comfort and Welfare.

Three great lakes to fish, river winding through town, and not far from deer country. I realize we are digressing from the thread, but my choice would be between San Angelo and Alpine. I believe you would agree, that would be a tough choice. To stay on thread, just imagine cycling or scootering through the Big Bend Country. The small scooters would do just fine. No sense in getting in a hurry in the Big Bend. When all else fails, BLAME BUSH! |

Thor96 wrote:Hey, I started this thread - digress all you want. Yep Alpine is o.k. but have you been to Fort Davis lately? As for Big Bend, we lived there for 7 years until our kids were facing a long commute to Marathon or boarding in Alpine to go to High School. I accepted a transfer to Grand Canyon one month after my wife accepted the job as Postmaster at Big Bend. We probably would have stayed in Panther Junction until retirement if it hadn't been for the school situation. As for scooters or cycles in Big Bend, they're o.k. but watch out for the javalinas. I remember some pretty messy encounters made on those roads after dark.

I lived in San Angelo from 96 to 02. I left for a promotion and miss the place. I had moved from Peoples Democratic Republic of California. The 1st time I
bought gasoline there, I parked infront of a gas pump and walked into the store. I said to the clerk, "$10 on pump 2." He looked at me, then looked
at his machine, then looked at our car. He said, "Oh, you're from California, around here we put gas in our car 1st-then pay." I'm sure
that's changed by now.
No one caught my double negative, " Doesn't NH also have no State income tax?" Gosh, any of my English teachers would have dropped my grade at least a by letter grade for that one. All this talk abut helmets has convinced me to wear a helmet when I ride on a bicycle. |

zimzam, I doubt the pay process has changed. Here in Missouri, the only places with pay up front are those on the interstate. But Missouri also has a stiff law
on drivaways, and most places have cameras in place for court use.
