I've recently purchased a 1948 birch k31 and have come down with the swiss flu..... I've got a 1934 walnut on the way and was wondering if the aluminum muzzle cap the correct one ?? Or maybe I should ask if the info is posted some where?? I know, I know pics, pics, pics.... lost camera usb cord.... got another coming. : ) Thanks guys, Brock in Arkansas

I really don't think it matters, the brass cap would be more appropriate on a 34. The aluminum ones would have come out during the war when brass was in short supply. As wkato said, the brass style would be more appropriate on the earlier models, while the aluminum would be found on later models. That being said, a muzzle cap is a muzzle cap, so whatever you have will work for now. Dunno, but I'll check and see if there is a picture showing a side by side. 1911 and 96/11s had different caps between them as well. IIRC the 89 also had a different cap. The one for the long rifles are mostly in brass but during the war also aluminum versions were made. For the M1897 cadet rifle there is a similar muzzle cover with a more narrow "cup". The early K11's had this special muzzle cover, later they got the covers similar to the K31's. The small black round bakelite cover was probably privately purchased. It is mentioned in the manual but I guess it was no official issue. The K31 muzzle covers come as well in brass as in aluminum. We assume that the aluminum covers were made during WWII due to brass scarcity. Thanks, Guisan. The early 1889 muzzle cover was held in place by the stacking rod and as it was often lost it was soon changed for the 1892 model. The 1911 model came as well in brass as the rare war time aluminum version. The arm was bend in a different way with these as the front sight was taller. Inner cover diameter fits the 15mm barrel and is just over 15mm diameter. The 1897 cadet rifle muzzle cover had a more tight cover that measures 14mm diameter and won't fit any of the long rifles. Here the differences seen from behind. The 1892 muzzle cover has pear-shaped arms while the 1897 and 1911 models have straight arms. In part 4 "Handfeuerwaffen Gradzug-Systeme" is a drawing of a pear shaped cover with the arms fitted direct to the "hat" of the top part (top part is less wide) and that one is also said to be for the cadet rifle.
