Isn't that the one that was used to kill Miles Archer, Sam Spade's parter in "The Maltese Falcon"?
You are correct, it is a cool (automatic) revolver. Is it yours?

Well yes and no regarding the Maltese Falcon. Watch the movie and you will note that the pistol actually used in the shot where Miles is killed is a regular
Webley (Probably a Mark VI), since the hammer is not recocked after the discharge. There is a later scene where the police show a Webley Fosbery and identify
it as the murder weapon. However, it is a case where Hollywood corrupts the reality. Bogart's character identifies it as a Webley eight shot 45 automatic
revolver (they don't make them anymore, he adds). The 455 versions were all 6 shot and that is what is shown in the movie (could even be this very pistol).
Although Webley did make a few 8 shot Webley Fosbery revolvers, they were all chambered for 38 ACP (same ammo as the Colt 1902 military pistols). In the
original novel, Dashiell Hammett refers to the gun as an eight shot 38... Probably the prop people in Hollywood could could only come up with the more a common
455 model, and at that they did not even shot the real thing!
BTW another movie appearance for a Fosbery was in the movie Zardoz, a strange 1971 cross between Barbarella and Apocalypse Now. Sean Connery shot his Webley quite a bit in that movie. Yes, happy to say, this is a new addition to my collection. Marcus |
