I just got an M96 in a trade. It was made in 1909, and looks pretty good for being 100 years old. It has some figure in the Walnut stock. It is all matching.

Nice!!! Reminds me of the M96 that I had until a bout of "stupid" came over me and I sold it. Mine was also a Carl Gustov 1907...after cleaning it
up it appeared to have never been fired! Brass disk can tell alot about the barrel. Again looks good...thanks for the show

Pretty stock, even with the dings! And you might be able to lift some of the shallower bruises on the wood, using the methods professional furniture restorers
practice to remove dents without stripping the finish.

Without stripping the finish? I would like to learn about that.

Jim, I don't want to steal fenrir1's thunder, but I'll bet a donut hole it has to do with steam. I haven't had a whole lot of experience with
it, although I did try it with a K31 that had been used to dig snow. Okay, fenrir1, tell him how to do it.

I thought the finish had to be stripped off before the dents could be steamed out.

Isn't the finish just BLO?

I think so. I thought I remembered someone saying the finish had to be stripped to the bare wood to steam dents out.

Jim, I think you can lift some of the dents without stripping. Take the question down to "sporterizing" or "stocks" forum. You should get
some response down there. My experience is limited and I just used wet rags and hair dryer. I've been shopping auctions for one of the old fashion steam
pots. I think that would work best.

I have an old iron that stays in the garage. I will try it without stripping the finish, although the steam might remove some. I have some Tung Oil Finish I
can use if it does.

Alright, you are rattling the old gray matter. I remember now, I did use a steam iron some. Works fair, but I would still like to try the old steam kettle
sometime. Jim, I would tell you about my gray hair, but there's so little of it left, there's not much to tell.

One of these days I'll get Paul to take an action pic of me at the range. Us old bald grey heads gotta stick together.
I remember my chaplain back when i was a cop. The guys were picking on me about getting bald- in my mid 20s. He was very bald. He told them that, in the beginning, God could create just a certain number of perfect heads. The rest He had to cover up with hair! Guys, I know Thor wanted to take this dent raising thing down to another forum, but it IS adding count to this fine Swede section, so here is my take on
removing the finish to raise the dents. The goal is to introduce steam into the wood fibers so they swell and raise. So the only finsh you should have to
remove would be a totally waterproof sealed finish. I don't think BLO will inhibit the introduction of steam, but I never tried doing any without stripping
first.
If the wood fibers are broken however, this method will not work.

My bald head is a solar panel for a sex machine so I don't know why all the guys wouldn't want one.;>)..Jim P.S. Tung Oil wasn't a propper
finish for Swede's. Try BLO aka. Boiled Linseed Oil...

I read a very interesting article against the use of BLO, and in favor of the Tung Oil Finish. It may not be correct, but it made sense. I won't use Tru
Oil or wax though.
Solar panel huh? Mine is more of a reflector. Jim NRA Life Member Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... BLO is a more correct finish for the Swedes, not necessarily a better protector against the elements. The article you refer to pepper, is probably written from
a protection standpoint, not historical accuracy.
Personally, I like the effect BLO gives the old mausers. IMHO the wood has to be very clean and blemish free for the tung oil to give its best appearance. Strictly my opinion. It boils down (no pun intended) to what you are trying to accomplish, and your personal preferences. We don't get enough sun up north here to turn bald heads into sex machines..........................

Well at least now we know the difference between a solar panel and a reflector. Some got it and some don't.
Pure Tung Oil is a rare find. Most will have driers and other ingredients. The finish is definitely different. Because of that, after the initial soaking, it will seal over and anything else just lays on top. But BLO will continue to soak up each application until the wood is literally saturated. My granddaddy had hand tools treated with BLO older than Methusalah. There is an old rule for applying. Once a day for a week. Once a week for a month. Once a month for a year. Once a year for life. That's why some of these old Mausers have lasted so long and why they are so heavy and hard to clean up. That's not Cosmoline that has made them heavy, it's the BLO. Hey... I think I'm finally beginning to understand these old stocks. That's why they are so hard to sand and the sandpaper just keeps loading up. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
