12 ga. slug loading question |
Lead | |
|
I want to load some 12 ga. 7/8 oz. slugs that I cast with a Lee mold. This is the type that is loaded inside a regular shot cup. I haven't seen a lot of
data for it and I am wondering if there is any reason why 7/8 oz. shot loading data won't work. Has anyone tried this? I will appreciate any information I
can get. Thanks.

"the type that is loaded inside a regular shot cup"
Is this a type of a sabot? I'm a great one to advise you since my only attempt at shotgun loading with a Lee Loader was less than successful. I did pull up IMR.com which eventually leads to Hodgdon, since they bought them out. They have some recipes for slugs. Play with it and maybe you will find some satisfaction in your decision. I know shotgun is different than rifle and you don't fudge the way we sometimes do with rifle, but you should find some comfort in your decision. I used to load the Lyman style 1 ounce hollow base slug years ago and just used the same charges as the shot loads. If I remember right I had to remove the cup
portion of the wad to load it.

Lee makes a 1 oz. slug mold. I use their recipe which is 49 grains of blue dot. the slug goes into a AA wad and you press a star crimp. I shoot allot of slugs
through my 870 tactical.

49 grains? That seems like more than twice what you should be using.

I just checked the current instruction sheet for loading the LEE slugs and BLUE DOT is not listed. Also the heaviest charge listed was 41.5 grains of Accurate #5. I think someone needs to do more research before loading any more slugs.

The 49 grains of blue dot recipe came with the Lee 1oz mold. Been using it for two years no problems.
