I recently purchased a semi-sporterized Type 99 arisaka on GunBroker, and want to turn it into a deer rifle. The front sight protective ears have been ground off, so there's no hope of keeping it original anymore. The rear sight was cut off, so just the close-in aperture is left. The stock was replaced with a sporter one...not too bad to look at, but not original by any means. Mum is gone (badly done job too), but all other markings are good. I'm thinking of putting a side scope mount on it, but would hate to ruin the markings. I've seen the "no gunsmithing" mounts that remove the rear sight and replace it with the mount, but I think this looks stupid on a rifle with a 25" barrel. Scout mounts are meant for short rifles, not full length ones, in my opinion. So, I need the best recommended way to mount a scope. Also, what would be the best scope for this rifle? I thought a classic 4X32 or so would be fitting. Thanks in advance for any replies.
