Is this a Military Colt? I think it is because of the hole for the lanyard, but there is no wear on the frame from a lanyard. How did the blue get stripped off this pistol because there is no evidence of sanding or polishing on the slide around the rollmarks or serial number or around the rampart colt. If this was yours would you refinish it? I mean a "professional" refinish. The pistol is in very good condition other than the finish. Grips are dark brown, not black and there is no blueing under the grips.

The U.S. martial Colt revolvers and pistols I have that were manufactured after 1900 all have U.S. markings - U.S. Army or U.S. Property - and inspector's marks. I'm no expert, but I would hesitate in having the pistol refinished until you find out for sure it had any sort of original finish. If you look at the rear of the trigger guard where it meets the frame you will see some blue. How they got it all off I don't know. The pistol over all looks good minus the blue finish (I think) Thanks for any and all reply's.

Go to the link, then at the top in the middle of the page click on the search and you will find 2 listing for the 1902, One for the military and one for the sporting model. Your serial number places it as a military model, I think. From your serial number it was made in 1922. I don't think the civilian (sporting) model had the lanyard. Since I have a source for a nice used original Colt lanyard I suppose I should buy it and install it to at least make the pistol complete and then consider the finish. By the way, where would the US property/US Army marks be on this pistol so I can look and see if they have been removed. Thanks for all the help, I am finding this a very helpful forum. Posts: 52 (10/16/08 6:29 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	The 1902 Sporting Model has a round butt and no lanyard ring. There are two variants of the 1902 Military Model. The early ones had the slide serrations in the front and to the best of my knowledge all the 1902's accepted into military service were of this pattern. Later 1902's had the slide serrations in the rear, ala the 1911, but as far as I know none of this pattern were purchased by the U.S. government. Hard to remember exactly but I think something like 18,000 1902's were produced but only 200 or so actually purchased by the government. I believe the rest were civilian sales. -Bob

I have decided that I will have this pistol "restored" since it has had 99% of its finish removed, but is in otherwise great shape. I found the shop that did the bluing for the "Replica" colt 1911's a few years back and talked with the guy who does the bluing and restoration work. There shop is about an hour drive north of me so I decided to drive up and do a FTF so I would know who I was dealing with. Both people Ron and his son Paul are great people and nice folks to talk to. Paul is the one who will be doing the work. He has quite a bit of back-log, but I don't mind waiting for this type of work. The pistol is now in his hands for the next YEAR.

Removed the lanyard because of a Lefty. Makes sense to me. The pistol is now in it's 6th month of being at Ron's Gun Shop and is ( I hope) in the middle of it's restoration. As soon as it is returned to me I will post pictures. Now I need to find a way to "dye" the grips back to original color. One grip has faded to almost a chocolate tan (left grip in the above photo's) compared to the other on. Or I need to find a original pair of grips but I suppose I am looking for a high dollar pair of grips.

I haven't heard from them so I recently sent them an email and am now waiting for a response.
