He had shot some and had trouble with misfires, duds and the like.
I'm going to pull the bullets and get rid of the old power.
I was wondering is there a safe way to punch out the old primers so I can reuse the brass?

Question on Old Brass? |

Had a friend give me around 150 rounds of some old 45acp the other day.

If you deprime them slowly.ie don't slam the handle down,it is highly unlikely that they will detonate.
Even if one does it won't be a big deal. Alternatively you can do all sorts of things to kill the primers like WD 40 etc.None of which is sure fire so what the heck! Why not just shoot 'em up and use the duds as training aids? Sounds like good opportunity for some drills. John

Sure. I just deprimed some brass just the other day. But use a deprimer die, not a regular die. Main reason this is not as dangerous as it may seem is the
anvil must be popped forward to detonate. Depriming pushes the anvil backward. Just take it easy and you'll be okay.
The reason bolo says it's no big deal if one does detonate, is that a primer doesn't create a lot of pressure, mostly incendarary. The brass is surrounded by the die and shellholder on the bottom and contains everything. But it is still a good idea to wear safety goggles. bolo has a good idea too, suggesting you just shoot them and have fun. Then what don't shoot, deprime. Thanks Guys,
Think I will just deprime them, as my friend said that a couple of rounds didn't make it out of the barrel. strangms |

as my friend said that a couple of rounds didn't make it out of the barrel. Now you're talking real danger. What if you don't realize it. The next shot could blow up the gun, taking a hand or worse with it. "The nature of your faith is wrapped in the object of your faith" David Jeremiah |

Pull the bullet, dump the powder, Put some oil (wd40) in the primer wait a day then deprime. Wear shooting glasses when you deprime. If the ammo is that bad
the next one could really go 'boom'. Primers can go off even when soaked in oil.

What I would do is pull the bullets, dump the powder then single load the primed cases in my pistol and fire them. then reload as normal.
They are great for getting rid of spiders and other insects.

If you clean your gun after your shooting session like you should then there is no problem with the gun. Cleaning the fired cases is a part of reloading so
there is no problem there either.
