i used to own a 788 in 222. very fun setup, i had it shortly after i bought my place here and i cleaned out a few coons and skunks with it. one of the things i liked best about that rifle was the clip. i had two clips and always had one loaded the other for when target shooting or what i used to call hunting...heh... i want to get back to a cheap to load for 22centerfire, this is why my 40-x reciever i intend to build a 222 on or if things change i will build a 22ppc on it...but thats a lot more money. i had the best luck with 50gr bullets in the 222, the speer tnt was by far and away the deadlist bullet i used. this was before the v-max harandys came along. by the way that tnt bullet can take deer, on woodchucks, well lets just say its show time when they conect;) oh the 788 things maybe different now however when i had mine i could not get an adjustable trigger. the 788 is a very accurate rifle, one of its designers was a benchrest shooter, the reciever has some extra meat that we normaly dont see in guns. the 222, 223 just seemed to be a better setup. the larger action, 308, 243, 7-08, 30-30, their actions streched and the bolt compressed making neck sizing only unfesable while the 222, and 223 did not had streached cases, and could be neck sized. i wonder what a 788 could do in a heavy barrel varmint rig. oh yes the 788 had one of the shortest locktimes of any rifle built, as i recall it was faster than some speedlocks.

i strongly recomend to anyone to have a secondary heating system. the furnice is great but if things go to heck you need a wood stove or some other passive system that dose not require electricity to work. another idea is an LP gas heater, we had two of them when i was a kid in TX for our heat.

i would like to build a ppc on the 7.62x39 mini mauser. that just seems like it is meant to go together.

one of the few things spitzer did here in NY that was good was to get after the gougers. after our ice storm in 98 he went after them and cleaned a few bad guys out. be careful about the crooks they will be swarming you people looking to rip your wallet out of your hands. the $30 for 5gallons of kero seems a bit high to me. i wish i could afford a generator but i can make it through ok with my woodstove, kero lantern, coleman latern, candles and so on.

i have heard of the frozen glass of water before always seemed odd to me but now i think differently since i learned how the old houses were insulated...in that they were not insulated! clapboard, plaster, board, and wallpaper. lucky if you had tar paper.

a shell i have thought of is the 22-250 ackley, seems i read about one on an encor with a match type chamber, tight neck. i have thought that the 22-250 ackley would be fun on a mauser but for the fact the mag has to be altered and i dont know how it or the feedlips would need to be worked. still it would be good with all of that accuracy and speed. my bother had a swift in a 700 classic, he had a thing for the classics, he liked his however the cost of shells got to him and he didnt shoot the thing much.

another thing i read about the 788, it took more machine operations to make it therefore it cost more to make it...and it was an economical rifle?

if i do go with the ppc anyone want to buy a pacific guage and tool bolt body in 222/223 casehead?
