Bolt Not Closing

I think I may have one problem though. When I tighten up the barrel the stripped bolt will not close unless I force it. . Works like butter if I back the barrel off 1/4 turn. It looks like the nubs ( any one know the proper name ) on the face of the bolt are just hitting the barrel. I grabbed another receiver ( which is kinda pitted ) , tightened up the barrel and the bolt closes just fine. Anyone ever had this happen? I think that if I hit the nubs a few strokes with a file I can get the bolt to close better. I can force it closed now so I know its close. So what do you think? Should I use the pitted receiver or just take a bit off the nubs? I should add that this build is from parts, literally, receiver here, bolt there, trigger guard from somewhere else....

If so you need to measure the distance from the action face to the interior shoulder ring where the barrel snugs up. Then measure the length of the shank on the barrel, from the shoulder to the breech face. These should be the same measurement, check the bolt in the receiver(with no barrel on it) to make sure when its closed the bolt does not protrude out beyond the ring, the extractor and knubs you referred too should be flush with the ring and therefore the breech once its screwed in. I am just guessing but I think you will find the bolt is a bit long. If you have another bolt you can check it to see if it fits with the barrel on, and check them side by side to see the difference. There can be a big difference from one bolt to another in length. You could shorten the barrel shank to allow the bolt you have to work, but it can result in un-supported case head which is not a good thing.

The bolt is definitely too long. I can see where the nubs are rubbing against the barrel. I never would have expected that one. Since I do have to return the reamers I guess I will proceed with the pitted receiver. I was not going to blue this one anyways . Thanks, NH

I'm not sure which one, but I think there is one that will give exactly the problem you are describing. This is probably the case as you admit this is a parts gun. If it was a 96, you could solve it by taking a tad off the tenon of the barrel, as it seats on the outer shoulder. The 98 seats on the inner shoulder and that wouldn't work. I woke up sick as a dog but wanted to get this put together since it was the weekend and I had time. I started about 7:30 this morning. I drilled and tapped both receivers. Then I had to figure out how to hold the barrel in my vice since the bushing was too small. I found some copper strapping and that did the trick. I then had to finish altering a 3/8 socket extension to fit my tap handle. I started reaming and then I found that the bolt would not close. Thankfully I still had a long way to go. I then switched to the other receiver and continued reaming and reaming and reaming. I got it so the bolt closed with slight pressure so I gave it one more light turn with the reamer. The bolt now closes very easily on the go and does not close on the NO Go. Its getting close to 3:00 and I am feeling a bit better and am happy as can be at my accomplishment. I must thank everyone for all their posts that encouraged me barrel my first action. I still have a lot of work to do but you know I will post a picture as soon as I can. NH

There should be .002 clearance between the barren tenon and the bolt nubs. Carefull measurement from a depth mic and a diamond file is the best way to fit them, if you don't have a mill. You usually don't run into this problem unless it's a different manufacter. The Turks are the worst as they got their bolts from lots of different sources. -Don
