Have a question on what to do with my 96 |
Lead | |
|
I picked up a fully matching M96 with nice bore and stock, only problem is that some one drilled and tapped the thing for weaver type bases, and cut and welded
the original knob(still has the numbers in it). The work was done fairly well. Since its not a collector now, what about doing a sniper clone with side rail
mount? At least I would not be ruining a collector swede eh, or should I just get bases and put a scope back on it on the weaver bases? I only gave $100 for it
so I will use if for something. Here is a pic of it just as I got it. What would you guys do with it?

I would scope it and keep it as original as possible. You've at least got all matching numbers and that means more than the other issues. I have a similar situation except non matching bolt and barrel bands. You got a good price on it too. I wouldn't sell mine for less than $250. Hi losok,
I see you found the link I sent you. If you were going to try and find a correct type Swede sniper base and scope it will cost you about as much as just buying a correct Swedish Sniper. I would say to place a Weaver base (I think that's what you said fit the holes already there) and a good modern scope and enjoy shooting a finely crafted and accurate rifle. If you hunt with it you will find that it has low recoil, exellent accuracy and deadly bullet preformance. The 6.5x55 round is the most popular round used for hunting moose in Scandenavia and with a 160gr pill it will drop all North American big game. Of course I would go with the 120 to 140gr bullets for deer size critters. One thing that I enjoy is going to the range prior to hunting season and shooting one of my approx 100 year old rifles. All the guys with the more modern Remchesterugers and high dollar scopes can't seem to print 1.5 to 2 in groups that my old rifles do with open sights. They commonly shoot 4 in groups and you hear them say " That 4in group is good enough to kill a deer at 100 yds. but can you imagine what that old army rifle would shoot like with a scope." Then they want to know what kind it is and how much one costs. When I tell them that I bought it a few years back for around 100.00 to 200.00 USD, depending on the rifle, and then ask them back "How much did you pay for yours?" they smirk and say, "A whole lot more than that." BTW, Welcome to the forum...Jim |

Yeah, I wish I had the eyes to shoot the iron sights. I had a forum buddy several years ago who had eagle eyes and claimed 1"MOA with the Swede. I
can't do it. But scoped, I have two sporters shooting under 1/2" and one of them would shoot 1/4" if I laid offf the caffiene, learn trigger
control and sort my brass. Shucks, both of them might do it. Just haven't worked at it. Never seen a Remchester do that, unless blueprinted and most are
not. Only blueprinted rifles I have seen were built on Mauser actions.

Thanks for the info guys. As I told Jim in a PM I am a full time gunsmith, I build tactical guns for a living, but love my old girls for hunting and for my
personal shooters. I just took a bison with my 03A3 sporter, and on the same day, my brother using my Dad's O3A4 clone I built him(my grandfather was a
WWII sniper and carried the A4) took a 550lb boar. Both the springfields will shoot sub 1/2 and the sporter using a GI barrel will do consistent .3s, its all
in the chamber and crown the barrels and actions are superior to what is made today that I can tell you. If this swede will shoot as good as it seems to, then
I think scoped it will be sub 1/2 Minute for sure. I cant get over how smooth it is, and how nice the trigger is on it. On the 03sporter, it was a sporter with
a pitted barrel when I got and I put a new barrel on that I had here, it also came with timney trigger installed, so its not to fair to compare it. I like this
site too, seeing these old rifles still being used is what I love the most. I try to keep them stock, but I run across so many that have been sporterized long
ago that just cry out to still be used.
I just saw a nice repro side rail mount for about 299, not an exact duplicate, but close. I also have access to a full EDM and CNC machine shop to maybe make one, how much the scopes run? Just curious. I am retired police officer, who was trained as a sniper so building older sniper clones is kind of in the blood I guess. I have humbled lots of guys at the range shooting the 03A4 clones and a couple K98 sniper clones. I am wrapping up a 98 clone right now, and will get some pics of it when its done. How far off is the siderail mount it used from the swede mount? If its close, I can clone it very easy in the machine shop with the measurements adjusted to the 96 receiver. If I got the cost down reasonable, would anybody want one? I dont need to make any money on it, just cover the cost and shipping. |

Beware the aftermarket base & mount for the Swede M-41b sniper that are being sold on EBAY in New York by Igor . There are no dovetails for windage
adjustment . Just a straight across square cutout , with no arc for pivioting . Just a short cut he made to cut costs . So , it is not worth buying .
There is an original Swedish M-41b sniper mount , rings & can with the Ajack 4x90 scope on EBAY now , starting at $100 from Sweden . This will sell in the $1000/$1500 range , more than a complete sniper from SAMCO Global . |

This is the one I saw that said it fits the swede,
http://home.comcast.net/~...ass1/Swedish/longside.htm I also have the cole distributing mount on hand its a LSR mount it could be made to work very easily, but how similar is the K98 LSR mount to the swede mount? |

I might be interested in the mount if the price was right. Just got my personal first swede..but...the shop where I got it had another in not as nice shape
that I would consider midifying for a scope.

Here is a pic of my recent find. The other one he has doesn't have all matching numbers and the stock is a little worse and the bore not as bright.
This one shoots great, even with some real cheap ammo the dealer threw in as a bonus. The only thing I want to change is to remove what looks like a Tru Oil shiny finish and do a hand rubbed oil like I do on muzzleloaders, comes out a nice satin finish.

recon14 wrote:Don't worry about a dark bore. It doesn't mean a whole lot. Look for well defined riflings (+) and pits (-). Does the bolt match? Then double check headspace, and make an offer he can't refuse. If the stock doesn't clean up, you can always find one, since it's not all matching anyway. In fact, I have one I would sell reasonable.
