McCain goes to Washington |
Lead | |
|
McCain is breaking from the campaign trail and the upcoming debate in order to go back to Washington to work on the Financial Crisis.. He challenges Obama to
join him. So far Obama chooses to continue stumping.

McCain proved old age and cunning overcome youth and strength. He pulled this over
on Barack in how he made the announcement. This might be the only time I agree with the Obama campaign's spin. lol My 3 kids attend Ole Miss and are like most young people focused on what is due tomorrow for class and such. The little town was really geared up, parking very disrupted, traffic diverted etc. My oldest daughter was selected to meet McCain in an education department forum so she is disappointed. Obama and McCain need to be in DC so something gets done. |

Two less fingers in the pie might help..... I agree with that. I am sure both points of view will be equally represented by the Republicans and the Democrats who are trying to work up a bipartisan deal to make the bail out work as best as it can given the circumstances. IMO, injecting presidential politics into the negotiations could end up poisoning the well and the stakes are just to high at the moment to let that happen. One thing is for certain, we are witnessing events right now that will alter the trajectory of our nation. Can we rise to meet the challenge or will we sink to new lows of political party bickering? I'd like to think we can unite to meet the challenge. |

This is all about strategy. McCain is there now in the presidential meeting, and is already taking leadership. He will come out of this looking like a
patriotic leader. Obama will be in ole Miss debating himself, looking like a campaigner.
What I really expect to happen, they will begin to make progress today and tomorrow, and then recess for the weekend. McCain will fly back to Ole Miss for the debate, then return to Washington to continue work on the bailout. McCain will look like a hero and Obama will be standing there with egg on his face. Remember, this is the guy who voted "present" 97 times in Illinois. So what is it to miss out on his senatorial duty when our nation is in crisis.

No, I believe it will look like political grandstanding on John McCain's part. Neither one of these two have showed up for any business in the last couple
of months, and all of a sudden,
John McCain wants to postpone a debate and help out in Washington? I just edited this and I believe he will show up tomorrow...

One thing I have come to the conclusion on is that a person anylizes a situation based on his presuppositions. If you don't like McCain, you will say it is
posturing. If you like him, you see it as bold integrity and patriotism. yes, I realize the same could be said about Obama. What I do know is that they are
both in Washington and hoping for a resolve. Interestingly, politicians on both sides of the aisle continue to chunk rocks at each other. Is it any wonder that
Congress has a lower approval rating than Bush? So Bush has approval rating below 30%. Congress has a present approval rating of 17%. That's pitiful. If
they can't reach some agreements in the next week, it will totally expose why they have such a poor approval rating.
The next few days is going to be very revealing about the character of the two candidates... as well as the Senate and House.

The democrats in congress played politics today and looked silly.
They claimed a deal was reached to embarass McCain coming to DC. Then when the President had a round table it was revealed that the conservatives in the house are not on board and are willing to take time and see a real plan that does the basics. Seems nobody verified if they were on board. God Bless them! At least it made the market look good for the day. Barney Frank is so worried that people (not all) over extended in homes they cannot afford not being covered it is sickening. Affordable housing is a code word for a special deal for minorities, not working blue collar or white collar folks. Barney does not cry if a guy working in a cube is overextended and loses his home, only those the liberals term, 'denied options to affordable housing', ie urban democrats. Sorry but it is very inconvenient being poor, always has been. Bush continues to fight off a long overdue recession happening on his watch and this real estate devaluation forces the Fed, Treasury and SEC to play along. Interest ratesshould be higher and they are dropping, makes zero sense. McCain responded as a senior senator should. This is a real crisis and Reid and Pelosi lack leadership skills. In my view they even lack common sense. Obama and McCain actually were getting on the same page yesterday, a first in politics during a election, then Obama had to go liberal and want protection for those poor souls Barney Frank is worried about. To the liberal mind lying about your income and credit to get a home is the result of bad lenders not the borrower if you are a poor democrat. The plan on the table this afternoon seems to have had conflicting goals, protecting the taxpayer and keeping the banking and investment industry afloat at the lowest possible cost which almost everyone agrees is needed. But with the conflicting add on transfer of wealth to keep people in homes that the liberals want to reward their life time voters. At least that is how it seemed trying to read those interviewed tonight. McCain reaches across the party lines much to the pain of conservatives to get things done, he is just acting like McCain. Rushing to make a decision on a issue that has been know about for years is a very error likely situation. Is this how we will handle the energy crisis? I am going to Oxford MS tomorrow morning, will be in the Grove on my camo chair with my kids sipping a diet coke watching the big screen outside the hall. Wonder if we will see a debate? I say 40% chance as of 10:30pm tonight. Lots of the kids left town since class was cancelled tomorrow. Their are bands coming in and food, should be fun. Ole Miss is rare, a GOP school, many, many students were wearing McCain buttons at the last football game. Only a few Obama stickers. Cork called my senators today....almost all calls coming in are not to bail out those being foreclosed on and ensure fat cats are not rewarded for failure. |

I think McCain should the crisis team along, and he can send Sara to
debate Obama. He could say, something like, "I'll have to let Sara handle this debate, and I have confidence that she can handle it better than Senator Obama, because she has more executive experience. I have no fear of her handling the job." I bet this would really upset Obama. Or maybe he could send Sara along with the comment, Sara can handle this if Barack really does insist on having the debate now instead of postponing it a few days. On the other hand, he can wait for me if Sara scares him.

I think both candidates are making stupid mistakes and makin less than presidential moves right now. Everybody feels like they have to 'do something'
whether it makes sense or not.
I cannot support bailing out the fat cats, and I cannot support a candidate who says one thing and does another. Both of them are doing that.

I believe that if this mess in Washington is not solved real soon, John McCain will lose this election, because of it. The problem is not the democraps but the
more conserative members within his own party. From what I have read the democraps are agreeing for the most part with the president. John McCain needs to
distance himself from these republicans and embrace
George Bush! Every one here knows how I feel about President Bush, but the man is right on what needs done, and some members of his own party is destroying it. |

I am adamantly opposed to any more 'bailouts' or government interference with the market system. Let some of the the banks fail. They set themselves up
for failure, encouraged by a Fed that allows lending with less than a penny reserve on a hundred bucks! This is not going to be pretty no matter where it goes
from here. Whatever the government ends up doing is going to be wrong and will end up doing more damage than good. So they should do what they do best:
nothing.
Where is the bailout package for the working taxpayers who have been carrying this country, tolerating the rich lawyer politicians who don't have a clue how I live, and absorbing the consequences of fat cat CEOs, CFOs, and COOs for the last 50 years????? Where I ask, WHERE ?? One more straw may break the camel's back. The dominoes are going to fall, regardless of what the administration or congress can do. We are in the danger zone already, with inflation and recession happening both at once, an out of control Federal Reserve system, and leadership that can't agree if the sun is shining or not. The ship has broken free of its moorings, and is about to run aground with more than a few casualties. The big hammer is about to fall.........................mark my words.

vs, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Let's get back to building our economy on durable goods and resources, not the banking and insurance
business. Stop importing junk from China and crank our factories and plants back up that have been closed as the market has been outsourced.
As some of you may know, I recently bought a used Honda Helix scooter. Man, I like it. I could have bought one of those cheap Chinese scooters for probably 1/2 the money, but they are having problems with the metallurgy, bearings, etc. My motor will last 75K. Theirs will be lucky to make it 20K. Little doubt we need to deal with some problems in our own factories, but we also need to bring our business back home, not importing junk. Anybody bought a decent scope lately? Probably a vintage scope on eBay. You won't find a good one at WalMart anymore. "Made in China".

I'm afraid that no matter what they do in Washington the rest of us are in for some rough times. I think it would be prudent to stock up on enough
necessities to get by for a while. There are a lot of problems that might occur, a truckers strike over high fuel cost followed by social unrest or riots if
the supermarkets don't get deliveries, What if the welfare checks are delayed? With the economy in turmoil the effect of even a small terrorist attack
could be very bad for the economy. Don't get me wrong, I'm not scared but I am concerned, There is nothing I can do to affect the big picture but I can
do a few things that might help my family and myself. I believe that prayer is the most important thing but beyond that there are practical things I can do to
prepare, just in case.

wauto,
you are on the same track as me. I am preparing best I can for a really strong recession. We did not experience one after the Tech Bust and now can add the real estate bust to the pain. Stockpiling canned tuna had a return of about 18% in the carter years, inflation is a really painful thing, we will now see inflation with a depressed and flat real estate market a double hit. if someone must relocate their home, now is the time, interest rates will be forced up soon, real inflation I feel is at least 8% now. My young broker does not grasp that I had 18.5% callable bonds in the Carter recession and it was still not enough. Cork

The last couple of posts worry me. Guys, we can't become so pessimistic that we get drug down. Don't let the media and politicians get us down. America
can't win if we do that.

Thor,
Pray I am over reacting but I feel like the hard core commie's did when the wall came down. Nothing is happening to make us a producer and not a consumer nation. Only 25 years ago we were a lender now we are a creditor to other countries, especially China. China has so much credit to us they cannot dump us, we as a nation are a bad loan. Lack confidence the leaders can undo these wrongs and get us back towards capitalism with it's rewards and punishments, especially with small businesses. I would cheer up if someone was fighting for the long overdue term limits on every elected official! The GOP let me down when they took over Congress on this issue years ago. Cork |

Well Cork, I agree that it's enough to make a grown man cry, especially if he loves his country. But we've got to keep our head up. We can't let
this thing destroy us. The Republicans had a great opportunity, but they fell asleep at the wheel. At a time when we needed leadership in the party, they hid.
Gingrich is very capable but he had lost his credibility. In watching Rove on the commentaries during the campaigns, I'm pursuaded he too is capable, but
alas, he lost his credibility, thanks to the democraps who continually attacked him. So the Democraps accomplished their goal of destroying the Republican
leadership. No chiefs to lead the Indians and the war was lost.

Thor, I am keeping my head up because I am not worried about the outcome. I am however, not sticking my head in the sand either. I contacted both of my
Senators and my Congressman to give my input on the bail out, but they aren't listening to us. It is quite obvious they will do what they want anyway.
I am just watching with anticipation for the final 'bail out', and many of you know what I am refering to. I'm glad my trust doesn't lie in man and his solutions, but in my savior Jesus Christ.

vs, I don't have to guess on that "bail out". It's even better than "Scotty, beam me up". Judging by world events, this could be
the days we've been looking for. Rumours of wars and financial crisis all fit. I'm listening for that trumpet.
